The December 2025 release of Home Assistant brings some of the most significant improvements to the Energy Dashboard we've seen all year. If you're serious about tracking and optimizing your home's energy consumption, this update is a game-changer.
Let's dive into what's new and how you can take advantage of these features to maximize your energy savings.
Real-Time Power Monitoring is Finally Here
The most requested feature has arrived: the Energy Dashboard can now display real-time power consumption alongside your historical energy data. This means you can:
- Track your real-time grid consumption as it happens
- See how much power you're exporting back to the grid
- Watch watts flow through your system in real-time
- Identify power-hungry devices instantly
The power configuration options now appear alongside energy settings for each source or device. New power graphs let you see consumption throughout the day with much finer granularity than before.
Pro Tip
Combine real-time monitoring with our Energy Automation Guide to create automations that respond to power spikes instantly.
Water Tracking Gets Proper Visualization
If you've been tracking water consumption alongside energy, you'll love the new water usage graphs. Previously, water data was there but lacked proper visualization. Now you get:
- Detailed graphs showing where water is being used
- Device-level water consumption tracking
- Comparison views across different time periods
Tabbed Dashboard for Multiple Resource Types
Here's a quality-of-life improvement that makes a huge difference: if you're tracking multiple resource types (energy, water, gas, power), Home Assistant now automatically splits the dashboard into tabs.
The date picker is now sticky at the bottom of the screen, making it much easier to switch between days, weeks, or months on mobile devices.
Pie Chart View and Better Totals
Building on the November 2025.11 release, the devices energy graph now offers a pie chart layout. Toggle between the regular bar chart and pie view with a single click in the top-right corner.
New Integrations Worth Noting
EnergyID
Export your home energy data for analytics and benchmarking against similar households.
Essent (Netherlands)
For Dutch users: dynamic electricity and gas pricing is now directly integrated. Perfect for automations that optimize consumption based on real-time prices.
Important
The Essent integration requires an active Essent contract with dynamic pricing enabled.
Victron BLE
Victron Energy devices supporting Bluetooth Low Energy can now be integrated for real-time monitoring. This is huge for off-grid and solar battery setups.
Device Hierarchy: No More Double-Counting
You can now create parent-child relationships between devices in your energy configuration. No more inflated consumption numbers from double-counting when you have both circuit breakers and individual smart plugs.
What This Means for Your Energy Savings
With these improvements, the average household can more accurately:
- Identify energy vampires — Real-time monitoring makes it obvious which devices consume power even when "off"
- Optimize solar self-consumption — Better visibility into when you're exporting vs. consuming
- Track water waste — Visualize patterns and find leaks
- Benchmark performance — EnergyID lets you compare against similar homes
